My Experience:
Angela Erskine is a Fine Arts painter. She was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and is a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Angela has exhibited at the National Gallery of Jamaica and in several other exhibitions.
In 2000, Angela was part of a group of six artists that exhibited in an exhibition titled Jamaicart 2000, which opened at Cooper's Gallery in New Jersey, USA. In addition, Angela has participated in several group exhibitions for young Jamaican artists and young professionals, presenting works in Jamaica’s galleries.
In 2006, Angela presented an installation as part of her thesis on the topic of “Child Labour” at Humber College, Lakeshore campus and in 2024, she exhibited with a group of artists at Beaux Arts Gallery in Brampton.
Angela’s works are mostly inspired by the Congo nail fetish, which is a very interesting and important wooden statuette commonly referred to as the nail fetish. Taking a sculptural approach, Angela has used mixed-media pieces such as razors, nails, and safety pins to create severe wall sculptures on large canvases, often portraying emotional and social pain. Angela says, “We are like an army of people confined in a restrictive manner to the political and social environment”.
Angela was selected for the L. P. Azar award for Best Teacher of the Visual Arts. She was also selected for “Artist of the Week” for Smile Jamaica in 2000, a popularly known morning program aired on TVJ. Angela has taught in high school settings in Jamaica, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Canada. She was a member of the Jamaican Artists and Craftsmen Guild.
Presently, Angela does her artwork at her home in Ontario, Canada. She also works with high school children and youth in a school learning environment.
